Tips for Safer Gambling
BE HONEST WITH THOSE YOU LOVE ABOUT THE TIME AND MONEY YOU HAVE SPENT GAMBLING
If you find yourself struggling to be honest about what you have spent or how you are spending your time, consider getting some help.
EXPECT TO LOSE AND TREAT ANY WINNINGS AS A BONUS
Treat gambling just like going to a concert or going out to eat, do not expect to get your money back at the end.
SET A MONEY LIMIT AND STICK TO IT
Have a look at your finances and see how much you could spend without jeopardizing other responsibilities. Click on the following link to understand your Cost2Play.
HAVE OTHER HOBBIES AND INTERESTS
Make sure that you keep up with other activities, so that gambling does not become your main pastime.
SET A TIME LIMIT AND STICK TO IT
Decide on a time when you will leave the venue or website, to help you stick to your budget.
QUIT WHEN YOU ARE AHEAD
Do not assume you are on a lucky streak and keep gambling.
When It's No Longer A Game
Problem gambling is any gambling, betting, or wagering that causes family, financial, legal, emotional, or other problems for the individual, their family, or others. Gambling problems can be mild, or quite severe, and can worsen over time.
Are you concerned about a potential gambling problem? Take the ten-question self-assessment.
- Have you been preoccupied with thoughts of gambling while doing other things that require your attention?
- Have you been restless or irritable when unable to gamble?
- Have you hidden your gambling from family members?
- Has gambling created conflict and unhappiness in your life?
- Have you tried to stop gambling but have not been able to?
- Have you gambled to obtain money to pay debts or solve other financial problems?
- Have you needed someone else to bail you out of a gambling debt?
- Have you ever borrowed money and not paid it back as a result of your gambling?
- Have you been unable to pay bills due to gambling losses?
- Have you ever thought you might have a gambling problem?
If you answered 'yes' to any of the questions, you may be at risk for developing a gambling problem. The more questions answered 'yes,' the greater the likelihood you may have a gambling problem.
